The Walk: The Great Ridge which separates the valleys of Edale to the north and Hope to the south is possibly the most walked ridge in all of England, even beating Striding Edge in the Lake District for numbers in footfall per annum. The first 4km up to Lose Hill are easy to follow, but there are some turns after that which are not obvious - especially the sections across farmland between Lose Hill and Castleton, and Cave Dale and Mam Tor. 6 Turn right, downhill, back towards Mam Tor. Take in the panoramic view from Mam Tor trig point 5 Continue to follow the path down to a small monument in a dip in the ridge. This ridge walk offers amazing views of Edale Valley, Hope Valley, and the edge of Kinder Scout in the beautiful Peak District National Park. The terrain is generally good, but the path up or down Cave Dale (depending on which direction you choose to walk) is made up of loose stones and can be a little slippery even when dry.įor the most part, the circuit is not signposted. 4 Once you've taken in the views from the trig point, follow the flagstone path north along the ridge until it gets noticeably steeper. The views are great and the walk is incredibly quick and easy. If you want to complete the longer circuit walk, there’s plenty more elevation gain, but the climbs are broken up with a fair amount of flat track. Mam Tor is one of the most famous spots in the Peak District and it’s easy to see why. Known to be one of the best ridge walks in the country, this Peak District walk gives stunning views over Edale, Hope Valley and even the edge of Kinder Scout. It’s well maintained stone steps, which though steep are not slippery (when dry) and it only takes 10-15 minutes each way. This is a 6 mile walk starting in Castleton and walking through some of the most admired and stunning parts of the Peak District. ![]() If you simply want to walk to the top of Mam Tor and back, you’re basically climbing one path all the way. ![]()
